Physical Education

The purpose of Stone Lakes Elementary Physical Education Program is to provide all students with the knowledge, skills, and desire to live a healthy and physically active lifestyle.

Students at Stone Lakes Elementary Physical Education will be able to demonstrate competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few movement forms. They will apply the critical components (cues) and concepts to the learning and development of motor skills. They will achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness. They will demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings. They will demonstrate understanding and respect for differences among people in physical activity settings and finally understand that physical activity provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction. Curriculum is based on the Sunshine State Standards and Benchmarks.

The Physical Education program is led by Coach Eric Bitton, Coach Natalie Huff, and Coach Maria Wold. We are very motivated in teaching to all of our wonderful Eagles and anticipate a fantastic school year.

YOGA

This year Stone Lakes Elementary is implementing a new class in the Special Area rotation, Yoga and Mindfulness. Each class will focus on connecting our mind, body and breath through a series of fun and engaging activities that incorporate yoga poses and mindfulness concepts. By practicing yoga postures, students' bones are brought into alignment and muscles are strengthened, stretched and relaxed. Students' blood is oxygenated, helping to tone the nervous system and improve circulation. Yoga postures also promote flexibility and release tension throughout the body. The students will learn about the importance of the breath and will practice a new breath work exercise each month. Throughout the school year the students will learn about the Yoga Principles. These are the attitudes, values and personal healthy habits a yogic lifestyle promotes. 

Yoga Principles

September- #1 Practice Peace- practice openness, compassion, love, self-love, understanding, patience

October- #2 Be Honest- practice giving constructive feedback, forgiveness, nonjudgement, assertiveness, honesty, being true to yourself

November- #3 Be Generous- practice sharing, utilizing time responsibly, giving back, generosity

December- #4 Practice Moderation- practice self-control and moderation in all areas of life

January- #5 Be Clean- practice oneself and one's surroundings physically clean, eating healthy foods, exercising, cleaning up the earth

February- #6 Be Content- practice making the best of any situation, being grateful, being calm and joyful, not depending on things that are outside of your control to make you happy, enjoying daily tasks, focusing on the positive

March- #7 Work Hard- practice perseverance, developing good habits, having determination and enthusiasm for daily and long-term goals

April- #8 Have Alone Time- practice enjoying peaceful moments in solitude, being reflective, looking inward for answers and ideas

 

 

Students will also be learning about Mindfulness. Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present and aware of where you are, what you are doing and how you are feeling without any judgement. 

 The students will be exposed to a new mindful practice towards the end of each yoga class. My goal is to help the students become more aware of their actions and emotions. 

 

Mindfulness Topics

A few examples of mindful topics that will be cover through a variety of friendly activities are as follows:

-Mindful breathing- practice a variety of breathing techniques

-Mindful conversations- reacting vs. responding

-Mindful listening- listening with intention

-Mindful eating- observing the smell, flavor, texture, etc. of food

-Mindful feelings and thoughts of self and others- practice positive self-talk, positive interactions with others

-Mindful movement- practice yoga postures
